family friendly features

Everything we needed was there! Best kitchen we have had access to in years. Well stocked and all the tools we required were within reach. Twin mattress were a little firm. Market the family friendly features of this house more! Gates on the stairs and kid friendly everything are a huge plus.

Ms

So glad we rented this beautiful & well equipped beach house! The beds & furniture were all exceptionally comfortable. I was a little concerned about some of the other review comments (beds too firm, beds too soft, lol!), but apparently we hit the Goldilocks medium. We really appreciated that linens & towels were included. Didn't have to drag all that from home. We prepared all our meals at the house & found everything we needed. Really appreciated that there were some consumables (like foil, plastic wrap, ziplock baggies, etc.) available as we totally forgot to pick up those items at the store. Very pleasantly surprised to find a wooden cutting board & decent knives...we always bring our own (and a knife sharpener) because we usually find that the cutting boards are plastic (ugh!) and the decent knives dull or non existent. My only complaint is the cookware is non-stick & somewhat worn. We only use stainless steel & cast iron at home. We did bring one cast iron skillet (as we always do). We have health concerns about that non-stick finish, especially as it gets degraded over time with use. This home is beautifully decorated, very comfortable & all on one level once you walk up the steps to the deck level. With a toddler & a couple of 70-somethings in our family, this was much appreciated! The ping-pong table was a fun feature as well as the kiddie sand toys that were available for our toddler to take to the beach. We really enjoyed looking at the photo albums that documented the renovation of this beach house some years ago. The proximity of this house to The Conery ice cream shop did not go unnoticed by us...a pleasant walk or bike ride away with a delicious treat at the end. The stretch of beach near this house is beautiful & not at all crowded. We were at the beach early, late & middle of the SO appreciate the owners sharing it with us. We'll rent this home again, for sure! It's the nicest we've experienced at the OBX & we come down with kids & grandkids nearly every year.

we loved

We loved the house and would stay there again. We'd probably come after Labor Day, however, to avoid the crowds, but still have access to restaurants. The kitchen was well-equipped. We came after "the season", so restaurants weren't open on Sun/Mon/Tues so we cooked in. Master bedroom bed was a little too soft for us. The padding on the bed made it impossible to keep the contour sheet on.

great house

Great house. The kitchen had everything!! The bedding and living area was comfy. The only thing I’ll say negative is gaming systems were advertised which was a deciding factor because we have kids and the playatation II did not work. Another tv did not have volume and it took me a day or two to figure it out.

hot tub was wonderful

I'm a chef, so I travel with my own knives. With creativity, I was able to use what was available to make everything I'd planned! Loved drinking coffee in the morning on the screened in porch, listening to the ocean and watching all the early morning walkers/bikers/runners. The hot tub was wonderful to chillax in after a day on the beach.

want to book again

We would love to book this house for 2 weeks next year! The kitchen had everything we needed, from utensils to kid plates and silverware. The master bed was a little firm, but everything else was comfy.

Near and dear to my heart

My grandparents built this home and were the original owners until 1999/2000 when the current owners purchased the property. I spent the majority of my childhood vacationing here and it has always been like a second home to me. Last Summer, as a surprise for my Mom, I rented the house and we spent a week reliving our old memories and making new ones. Every room has been beautifully updated, but still has touches throughout that remind me of my grandparents, like the shelving just outside the kitchen. The entire house is fully stocked, there is nothing more I could have asked to be provided for our stay. The beach is a short walk away and anything else you need is a short drive away. We absolutely love everything about this house and can't wait to visit our home away from home again. If you're looking for a quiet, cozy getaway, CHX Cottage is where you want to be.

This house was awesome. First trip to the outer banks and the house was perfect. Short walk to the beach access and could hear the ocean from the porch. Kitchen is well stocked and had everything we needed. House was cozy and decorated perfectly for a beach vacation.

Winter Vacation @ CHX Cottage

Our winter vacation in Salvo at CHX Cottage was amazing. The weather was great and the house has all of the 'little things' that made it feel like a cozy home-away-from-home. That big side yard should get a pool added!

We had a wonderful stay at Chx Cottage. It is so cute, clean and homey! Loved the gated decks, the screened in porch that we lived in all day, and the kitchen! The kitchen is amazing! The master shower and the hot tub! I could list all day. The best thing though is just feeling at home as soon as we stepped in the door. Our reservations have already been made for next year!

Honeymooners

Our first trip to the OBX for our honeymoon and we couldn’t have picked a better house!! We are so thankful that the owners allow pets, so we didn’t have to leave our two home with a sitter. The ladies in the rental office we great to communicate with over the duration of us getting there, they were able to answer all our questions. The pictures do not do the house justice. So much space indoor and out. We enjoyed the hot tub a few of the evenings. My husband enjoyed his morning coffee on the front porch while I loved waking to the sound of the ocean. The walk to the ocean wasn’t far and headed there a few days and evenings. We ended up in Avon most of the time for restaurants and shopping. And it was a nice drive north to Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head to see some sites. Don’t forget to check out the Lighthouses while you are there. We enjoyed the time also over in the sound area as the dogs enjoyed getting in the water more over there. That was just a short five-minute drive. The house had pretty much everything we needed for the week – they provided the linens and towels and that helped us a great deal. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed, all we did was have to get some misc. items. (There is a dollar store right around the corner). Ohhh and we did take the time to look at the photo albums of the progression of the cottage as well as leaving a little note along with others. So much hard work and has been love put into this house to share with people like us. Thank you!! We are not sure when we will be making our next reservation to come back but it will be thru Sun Realty and definitely staying at CHX Cottage.

Make America Great Again! (2018)

Back again for 2018! My family and I love this bright, beachy cottage. Upon our first full day, Tropical Storm Alberto began dumping buckets of rain onto our vacation; despite the front yard resembing a pond, the stone driveway again proved its value, until the waters subsided. When the weather cleared, we had fun at the nearby beach (ocean-side) by avoiding big waves crashing over our heads as we floated beyond the surf. On the sound-side, which is a very short drive away, we had fun floating on rafts and enjoyed what we call our "lazy day". One day midweek, we found the rental close enough to the Ocracoke boat ferry to make a day trip to Ocracoke Island, which has extensive sandy beaches, where the water is warm and waist-high, and yet the incoming waves are ever swelling in size. Back at the cottage, we frequently relaxed in the hammock, regularly soaked in the hottub, and often prepared meals over the charcoal grill (like a grilled seafood meal which included a banana, chocolate and marshmallow foil packet dessert). So many other fun times and memories made in one week... Thank you CHX/S-49!
- Barak Jul 2018

Comments

We are thrilled to see that tropical storm Alberto did not stick around for long and everyone was able to enjoy lots of time outdoors. Relaxing in the hammock, soaking in the hot tub and cooking some yummy food on the grill all sound like fun times. After all, fun times and memories are a must while on vacation! Don’t forget to plan your next beach getaway soon! ~Salvo Team

Instantly Plugged In

I think we will always remember CHK Cottage favorably since it was our first visit to OBX. We both felt immediately at-home in the house, almost as if we'd lived there all along; Instantly "plugged-in" and feeling like we were home. It was amazing how the house matched our lifestyle. But those are the 'intangibles' about the place - important for sure, but let me be a bit more informative. We liked that there were gates built-in at the top of each stairway, including to the crow's nest, great for keeping the pups - or kids - safe and under control. The screened in porch was great! We spent the cooler parts of the mornings and then in the evenings out there reading or catching up on email with the overhead fans going which kept us feeling cool even when it was still warm and humid. When night fell we would retire to the 'living room' with the large screen TV and relax on the huge sectional - my wife claiming the large end couch. Bedrooms were good overall. I could go on about each bedroom but we didn't use them all but they looked very nice. The master was large with plenty of storage and the master bath was great with a big shower and beautiful stained glass window. The kitchen was simply awesome! Yes, there was a fluke-y burner on the stove, but it was gas, and that's always good. The appliances were good although the big ice maker was noisy, but hey, we never ran out of ice! The most awesome thing was that I kept finding more and more stuff for cooking and meal prep! Every drawer was a treasure trove of utensils, pots, pans, counter-top appliances, gadgets, and what not. "Fully stocked" is an under statement! Do bring your own paper towels, foil and plastic wraps/bags though. We did not make use of the garage-rec room area but the back deck in the evening was quite nice. There is decent privacy back there and using the hot tub was something we didn't expect to enjoy as much as we did. The idea of getting into hot water on a hot night...??? But it was good for the aching bones from the surf that was getting rough from Irma's influence. We couldn't have asked for a more pleasant first experience on OBX! Thanks CHX!

Make America Great Again!

This was our 1st time vacationing in Salvo (our 2nd Sun Realty beach house). Rental CHX/S-49 was fantastic... the beachy, soothing decor was why we chose this rental. The cottage was both functional and roomy, and each room relaxing. There was plenty of deck space too; the kids loved swinging in the hammock, as well as soaking in the hot-tub, despite their sunburns. On our arrival day, we enjoyed the outdoor deck space by eating Lisa's Pizza outside, while a steady breeze offset the evening heat. As far as indoor meals, the whole family enjoyed eating around the barstool/kitchen counter area as meals were prepared... AND THE KIDS actually talked-to-us (and each other). The beach is a short walk away; my kids and I almost forgot how much fun it is to walk beyond the ocean surf and battle the oncoming waves - - with an occasional wave knocking us over. We also went crabbing at night; I'm surprised at how many crabs we caught with all the loud laughing my kids made as they chased those wicked-fast, OBX crabs. And public access to the sound-side beach is about 1 mile away; one day we enjoyed a calmer day of swimming in the shallow waters of the sound. It's amazing; I walked a great distance out with the water-level never reaching my waist. Lastly, I don't want to forget to mention how nice the shower skylight is, in the master bedroom. MY FEEDBACK: (1) Probably the result of re-modeling to the house, but the placement of light switches doesn't make sense; maybe provide a guide of where to find the switches and which lights each switch turns ON/OFF. (2) Maybe get a beach wheel barrow, with large tires, to help carry one's beach gear to the beach. (3) Awesome... there was a immersion blender in the drawer to help me make homemade salsa (the rental-provided food processor didn't work). Also, one burner on the stove wouldn't ignite. (4) Appreciated the stone driveway; one day it rained and the house next door had only grass parking and the lawn was saturated.

Great Getaway

My first trip to the Outer Banks was amazing, and this house added to the fond memories made. The house provided more than ample room for my family of 4. The Hot Tub and deck provided a wonderful way to spend time around the house when not exploring OBX. The house was clean, well-maintained, and comfortable. The books provided a nice touch for the wife and kids to enjoy reading at night, or enjoying a novel on the beach. The ocean was only a short walk away while not in an overpopulated area. I would highly recommend this bargain to any family looking for a great home for an OBX vacation.

Spring Break Visit March 2016

We had a great stay at this adorable cottage. Great location. Kids loved to bike on Colony street. Hot tub was perfect. Kitchen set up was great for those who really love to cook, plenty of space. Master bed was new and comfy. Kids and other adults were happy with the other beds. The decor was perfect, no detail missed!! Overall a great find in Salvo/Rodanthe. If you're a Kite Surfer there is a great place across the street, Real Kit Surfing.

Lots of charm, great decks and porch

This was our first time staying on Hatteras Island. We loved the cottage - it was very cute, decorated very well, and the layout of the living space (in particular the kitchen) is great. It's in a great location and a quick walk to the beach (though those dunes get very hot to walk on during the summer so be prepared!). The master bathroom is very nice but the master bed is small and uncomfortable. They definitely need to replace the mattress and it'd be nice if there was a queen-sized bed at least. There were a lot of ants also in the kitchen but while we were there, an exterminator came and sprayed the outside without us saying anything to the realtor, so it appears there was already a solution in works. Hurricane Arthur cut our vacation in half due to the mandatory evacuation but on our way out, we reserved the house again next summer. We highly recommend it!

CHX Cottage

Overall, the house was awesome. We had a great time and plan on returning next year. The only complaint I had was related the bed in the master bedroom. The footboard is cracked and makes the bed very noisy. You can tell they have tried to fix it, but it hasn't helped. Every time my partner moved, it would wake me up!

A WONDERFUL home

My familiy and I have been coming to the Outer Banks for years. This was the first time we tried "south" and found the perfect house to do it in! It is perfect for a small group. The house is laid out in a way that everyone can find a bit of quiet. The decks on both sides are fantastic, hot tob is wonderful, and the kitchen a dream. The proximity to the beach was fantastic...wish there were walkways, but still not a hard walk. The bonus basement was fun...ping pong and darts. Plus the extra fridge and ice maker made it a perfect summer house. The whole group also loved the screened in front porch with fans...especially our four legged family member. There is realy not anything bad to say about this home. We will definitely be back at some point. ENJOY!

CHX cottage is a very relaxing and homey. It is obvious that the owners considered their guests when furnishing this beach house. It is just a short step to the beach. We would return to this cottage in a heartbeat. Enjoy it and have fun.

Chx Cottage is a perfect

Chx Cottage is a perfect getaway. I enjoyed getting up early and going up on the crows nest with a cup of coffee. Both the ocean and the sound can bee seen from the top. The house has a lot of amenities, both big and small, that make it a true getaway. The ice maker makes refilling the coolers a breeze. The hot tub is nice to relax in before dinner. The gas fireplace makes gathering together games around the dinner table in the evening. And I think I took a nap on the large sofa every afternoon. I stayed in a number of houses on the Outer Banks, and Chx Cottage is by far my favorite. My family and I will definitely go back!

We found the cottage to be

We found the cottage to be stocked very well. We experienced some minor housekeeping issues upon arrival. Furniture very nice (both indoors and outdoors), however, if you aren't in to extremely firm bedding, may want to reconsider. All beds were uncomfortably firm. Beach access good...a bit challenging the first time or two, but not bad at all after you got conditioned to walking in loose sand.

My husband and I and several

My husband and I and several friends have stayed at CHX for many years. We look forward to our yearly visit as it feels like home to us. We are excited each year to see what updates have been made. We are thrilled to hear that the kitchen is currently being renovated and can't wait to see it. As for the mattresses, we find them very comfortable and we always sleep well at CHX. We have recommended this house to our friends who have also had wonderful stays at CHX. It is such a cute and comfy cottage we think it is a great find.
