Why Yes, You Should Spend Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks

Thanksgiving marks the official start of the holiday season. Soon, Christmas music will blare from our radios, and Black Friday shoppers will flock to the outlet malls, but first there must be turkey. It has long been a family tradition: an early dinner at Grandma’s, followed by dessert and touch football in the backyard, but now is as good a time as any to start a brand new tradition. Gather the family (and the gobblers, too) for a week of rest and relaxation at the beach.

We’ve got stuffing to share, eggnog for everyone, and more than enough reasons to make North Carolina’s Outer Banks your favorite Thanksgiving destination.

Spend Some Uniterrupted Quality Time with Friends and Family

Uncle Joe lives in Charlotte. Bill calls Chicago home. Aunt Mary moved to Kansas in February; no one’s seen her since — but rumor has it, she’s making plans to pull up a seat at the Thanksgiving dinner table. A spacious Outer Banks vacation rental (from Sun Realty!) is the perfect venue for a family affair. Hey, the whole clan only comes together once a year. Why not dine in style?

We've Got Warmer Weather

Brrrr. It’s cold outside. By late November, there’s a high probability of snow, but not on the Outer Banks. In fact, our average temperatures hover in the 50s.

Go[ne] Fishing

The water may be cold. The anglers may be few, but Thanksgiving is the best time of year for fishing on the Outer Banks. Professional offshore fishermen are still hard at work, and vacationers can book a fishing charter excursion. If boats aren’t your thing, find a spot at the pier to cast your line.

Nothing Can Beat the View

Even in the off-season, the North Carolina coast boasts the best Atlantic beaches. Spend Thanksgiving in one of our oceanfront Outer Banks rentals, and enjoy the view: You'll see fishing boats in the distance, miles of undisturbed dunes, and dolphins playing in the waves. Stroll barefoot through the sand, or take in the scenery in a warm hot tub.

Shop to Your Heart's Content

Bargain hunters everywhere are starting to get excited, prepping their lists in anticipation of Black Friday sales, but let’s be honest — no one’s excited about the crowds. Nags Head’s Tanger Outlet mall is the perfect spot to find great deals at big-name stores like Coach, Ralph Lauren, and J. Crew, without the flying elbows. The Outer Banks is also known for its locally owned shops that offer the perfect OBX trinket for you and your loved ones.

And did we mention how affordable an Outer Banks Thanksgiving vacation can be? Sun Realty offers condos and vacation homes in every price range. Search our wide inventory of Outer Banks rentals or call a helpful Vacation Specialist at (252) 441-7035.
