Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores Beaches

Althoug Kitty Hawk, NC and Southern Shores, NC are located side-by-side, there are significant differences when it




comes to beach access. Kitty Hawk offers many public beach accesses whereas Southern Shores only offers private beach access. Please carefully review the following beach regulations for Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores.

Kitty Hawk NC Beaches

  • Please carefully review the complete list of Beach & Ocean Safety Guidelines before your vacation.
  • Leashed dogs are permitted on Kitty Hawk beaches. Owners are responsible for waste removal.
  • No glass is allowed on Kitty Hawk beaches.
  • No bonfires are permitted on Kitty Hawk beaches.
  • Remove all personal items daily, including tents, chairs, umbrellas, etc. Do not leave items unattended overnight, or they may be removed as litter.
  • Beach driving is not permitted.
  • Surfers must be tethered to their boards.

Kitty Hawk Beach Accesses: From north to south, below are the beach accesses with parking available in the Town of Kitty Hawk.

Kitty Hawk Lifeguard Stands: Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue patrols the beaches in the Town of Kitty H




awk from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Ocean Rescue are on duty from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm each day. There are fixed lifeguard stands at the Byrd Street access, the Eckner Street access, and the Kitty Hawk Bath House access, as well as roving lifeguards on ATVs. Please note that this information is subject to change without notice.

Southern Shores NC Beaches

  • Please carefully review the complete list of Beach & Ocean Safety Guidelines before your vacation.
  • There are no public beach accesses in Southern Shores.
  • No public parking is available in Southern Shores (parking areas are available with guest permits only).
  • Dogs are not allowed on Southern Shores beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In the off-season months, dogs must be on a leash.
  • On Southern Shores beaches retrieve all personal items daily, including tents, chairs, umbrellas, etc. Do not leave items unattended after 5:00 p.m. or they may be removed as litter.
  • Two lifeguard stands are available: Hillcrest Drive and Chicahauk Trail. Southern Shores lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm daily, Memorial Day to Labor Day.
