When will visitors allowed back onto Hatteras Island?
Visitor re-entry for Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras villages begins Thursday, September 15 at 7am via ferry service from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter.
The ferry route from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island requires a reservation and there is a fee for a portion of the trip. To make a mandatory reservation, call 1-800-293-3779 (press 2) or online at www.ncferry.org. Visitors are encouraged to make ferry reservations as soon as possible for both their departure trip AND return trip.
Visitors with upcoming travel plans for the villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo are advised the area is still under a mandatory evacuation and visitor re-entry will not begin until a future date, sometime after Thursday, September 29.
The Stumpy Point ferry to Rodanthe has been reserved for critical personnel, insurance adjusters, vendors carrying essential commodities, residents and non-resident property owners ONLY, no exceptions will be made.
Are you Hatteras Island offices open?
Our Salvo and Hatteras offices are now open. Sun Realty Hatteras Island staff are assessing the condition of our vacation rental properties. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we do our best to ensure our owners, employees and their families have everything they need. Our Avon office will begin check-ins Saturday, September 17 for those who choose to continue with their vacation as planned and use the ferry service from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island.

Is NC 12 still impassable?
Yes, NC 12 experienced 4 breaches. A temporary bridge is being built over the largest breach and Governor Perdue has secured funding to begin rebuilding the road along the other breaches. For more information and up to date information regarding the projects visit the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Recovery Efforts website.
If I purchased travel insurance but can't incur the extra travel time needed for the ferries, what are my options?
Travel insurance will cover your vacation as long as Highway NC 12 is impassable regardless of ferry service.You may choose to travel to Hatteras Island via the ferry system and enjoy your Outer Banks vacation or you may choose to file a claim with your travel insurance provider.

What is the deal with the mosquitoes?
Due to large amounts of standing water, the mosquito population in Dare County has increased dramatically. Aerial spraying over all of Dare County occurred the weekend of September 9 &10 in an effort to combat the rising populations. Many local stores are sold out of various bug repellants and citronella candles, so be sure to pack your own.
What if we miss some of our vacation due to the evacuation and impassable road?
If you have purchased travel insurance and the road to Hatteras Island is still impassable, your vacation will be covered under your travel insurance policy. Contact your travel insurance provider directly for information about the claims process. Travel insurance contact information is listed below.

How will I know if my vacation rental experienced damages from Hurricane Irene?
Our staff has been out assessing homes since the storm has passed and many of our homes are doing just fine. If your vacation rental experienced damage and will not be available for your stay, Sun Realty staff have notified the leaseholder.
Can I drive on the beaches of Hatteras Island?
Signs located at the various beach access ramps will state if driving is permitted on that particular area of the beach (see below). Speed limit 25 mph unless otherwise marked. Ramp 2 and Ramp 4 are the only ramps open to vehicles north of Bonner Bridge at this time.

Will I need to bring any items?
Hatteras Island grocery and convenience stores have had limited shipments so be sure to pack plenty of groceries, toiletries and essential items that may be in high demand. As mentioned earlier, bug spray and mosquito repellant is in high demand in these areas and may be sold out.
