Great "Sitting Places" on Hatteras Island, NC...

You plan for months... Get someone to water the plants, feed the fish, bring in the mail, mow the lawn, and sometimes even house-sit. You get all the Outer Banks brochures and make plans to see all the historic and entertainment sites. You figure out all the OBX restaurants you want to visit and all the fun "vacation meals" you want to cook.  You schedule as much time on the beach as you can. You plan to go swimming, fishing, snorkeling, hang-gliding, wind-surfing, kite-flying, shell-hunting, etc.

But... when all is said and done and you pack everything back in the car and go home... are you rested? Did you remember to schedule time to just sit and think?  Better yet, did you schedule time to just sit?

There are many great places on Hatteras Island where you can do just that. Sunset is an especially good time to just sit and think (or to just sit). My favorites are Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in the area south of
Oregon Inlet, the Salvo Day Use area south of the town of Salvo, and "Canadian Hole" (officially known as “Haulover Day Use Area”) just north of the town of Buxton.  There are parking areas at all three and amazing views sunsets over the Pamlico Sound.

Sunset is a perfect time to reflect on family, friends, and the beauty of Hatteras Island. Whether you see a gorgeous red sunset or an amazing cloud formation as a storm front moves through, you'll still be in a great quiet spot with time to unwind. When you look at photos later, you and your family will have special memories of sitting down together and sharing quiet time on your Outer Banks vacation.

Here's to sitting (and maybe thinking).
