The wonders of the ocean never cease to amaze me...

The beauty is undeniable, the serenity is irreplaceable, and the memories are unforgettable. The next time you visit the Outer Banks, go for a romantic stroll on the beach in the evening. Take in the cool, sea air. Listen to the waves breaking gently along the shore.

While exploring the beach, you may even discover something amazing - the sand is lit with a luminous, green glow! Take a closer look as your toes are surrounded by soft, cool sand and your ankles are teased by the splashing of the ocean. Run your hands through the sand and watch as the glow increases.

What is this mysterious glow? Well, it could be phosphorus, as many have claimed. Phosphorus is an element known to be luminescent when combined with oxygen or when cooled. Some Outer Banks fishermen say that the glow is from tiny shrimp, which live in the ocean and are washed onto shore.

I have also been told, and agree, that it is most likely dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates are also known as noctiluca.  The word "Noctiluca" is Latin for "night light." These organisms, belonging to a group of microscopic plants, feed on plankton and have the ability to produce light when disturbed or agitated. It's no wonder that the breaking waves cause the shore to light up with this wondrous glow, or that this rare phenomenon is stimulated by your footprints or touch.  No need to worry, this unique form of life will cause you no harm. It will only leave you longing to see more!

The wonders of the ocean and its many life forms are mostly hidden beneath the surface. However, we are sometimes fortunate enough to see something amazing, like this luminescence. While on your next Outer Banks vacation, spend some time under the stars. An evening stroll on the beach is a wondrous experience.
