The World Championship of Surf Kayak kicks off today in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Over 300 competitors from 22 countries are competing in this event. Originally scheduled for Hatteras Island, the contest was moved to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, NC after the impact of Hurricane Irene.
Surf kayaking utilizes specially designed kayaks to ride a wave in much the same way that a board surfer would. Many surf kayaks utilize fins and other surf related design concepts. In competition surf kayakers are judged on how dynamically they ride a wave, carving, slashing, and throwing finishing moves. In this way surf kayaking competitions are very similar to board surfing events. Surf kayaking is a relatively young, but quickly growing adventure sport.
The World Championships of Surf Kayaking, governed by the World Surf Kayaking Association, is an event occurring on odd numbered years that brings together the top surf kayaking competitors from around the world.
Last night, competitors, Nags Head city officials, residents and tourists gathered at Jennette's Pier for the opening ceremonies including a half mile parade on the beach to the competition site. The first heats began at 8 a.m. this morning. Head down to Jennette's Pier if you can and check out this awesome event from September 29th through October 10th.
