Origin of Town Name

Pirates didn't only plunder and pillage at sea! Legend has it that land pirates would tie lanterns around the heads of a donkeys, horses or "nags" and walk the animals up and down the beach. At night, the gentle swaying motion of the lanterns mimicked the look of ships bobbing peacefully in harbor. Ship captains would see this from a distance and begin moving their vessels towards the lights in hopes of finding safe respite from sea. However, the treacherous coastline would cause the ships to run aground and the land pirates were free to "relieve" the vessels of their merchandise and valuables.
