Origin of Town Name

A map from 1590 indicates an area called "Hattorask" near present day Bodie Island. Although the meaning is unknown, it eventually evolved into the modern name "Hatteras." The villages of Hatteras Island have changed names throughout the years. For example, Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo used to be collectively known as "Chicamacomico." The name change was due to the fact that Chicamacomico was too difficult to spell or pronounce!
