Hurricane Irene produced a significant amount of damage including widespread flooding across Hatteras Island. NC 12 received extensive damage and remains closed. Soundside and oceanside breaches have destroyed the road in multiple places. Power has yet to be restored.

Dare County Emergency Management is monitoring the efforts of Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative in restoring power service to the island. Generator power is still the only available source for the entire island.  Emergency Management understands the importance of restoring resident re-entry to Hatteras Island as quickly as possible.
