Drive north to where the road ends in Corolla and the magic of The Outer Banks begins. Enjoy the seclusion of these off road homes on the Northern beaches of Carova, Penny's Hill and Swan Beach. Homes are located off sandy trails and not available by anything but a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Although a bit of extra effort is necessary to access this area‚ the unspoiled beauty and tranquility are worth it!
Meet the Locals
Carova is home to the wild horses of the Currituck Outer Banks and many can be seen roaming the dunes and beaches. In the sixteenth century, horses were carried on the decks of ships and pushed overboard to swim ashore when ships wrecked or neared the shore. The horses have survived 500 years of fierce Nor'easter's and hurricanes. Nowhere else in the country can you see wild horses walking along the beach and grazing among beach homes. As of August 2010, the herd has dwindled to 86 horses. To learn more about the wild horses or to make a donation on their behalf, check out the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum Store in the old schoolhouse at Corolla Historic Village.
Prepare for the experience
Homes in Carova are serviced by private wells and septic and satellite TVs. Open skies and sunlit beaches are just a few of the natural amenities you will find. Guests are encouraged to bring bottled water for drinking and cooking. Public services are not available and maintenance delays can be expected during times of high tides and bad weather. Guests are advised to check in during daylight hours in order to proceed safely up the beach. Enjoy for the vacation of a lifetime in this vast untouched natural habitat.
The 4x4 area roads are all sand and unpaved. Adverse weather does cause flooding at times, making these remote areas not easily accessed by you nor emergency services during these times, please be advised. No rebates or refunds are given for unfavorable weather and similar circumstances.
