South Nags Head begins at Milepost 17, commonly known as Whalebone Junction, and is the furthest point south on the central beaches of the Outer Banks. The area is in part, connected with the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and sections are federally protected, so there is very little commercial development.
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the west, this area offers a long ribbon of vacation homes, smaller condos, and the Outer Banks Fishing Pier. A multi-use path stretches the five-miles that spans South Nags Head and is perfect for walking, biking, dog walking and rollerblading. The lack of commercial development in this area means the beaches are wide and uncrowded.

PLEASE NOTE: In the Town of Nags Head, unattended personal items must be removed from the beach between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Ocean Rescue and Emergency personnel can make sure that tents and canopies placed were not obscuring lifeguard stands’ line of sight. Tents and canopies on the beach can not be taller than 9 feet high and must be spaced at least 10 feet apart. Additionally, they cannot be larger than 12 feet by 12 feet. Please respect these rules and assist Ocean Rescue in their ability to see and monitor all activity on the beach and in the ocean.
