One of the most iconic historical structures on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, opens for the season on April 20th, 2012. To celebrate, the National Park Service is inviting Outer Banks locals as well as visitors to climb the lighthouse for free.  On this day only, free tickets will be available on a first come/first served basis and can only be obtained in-person at the site the day of the climb. 

Head over to the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills on Monday, April 16, 2012 for a special celebration of Wilbur Wright’s 145th Birthday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the whole day will be filled with family friendly events. Admission fees will be waived on the day of the event. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Junior Flight Ranger Program: Make sure the kids pick up their Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center information desk. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Let’s Go Fly a Kite: Free kite building and kite flying demonstrations by Kitty Hawk Kites at the Centennial Pavilion and park grounds.

The Lost Colony , the nation’s oldest running outdoor drama, will be opening its 75th season and yearlong “diamond anniversary” celebration. The Lost Colony opened its doors and stages for the first time in 1937. The play tells the mysterious disappearances of the men, women, and children who sailed to Roanoke Island and founded the first English colony in the New World.

The 1st Annual Hatteras Island Shorebreak 5K and Tidepool Fun Run will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, March 28, 2012. Participants will enjoy running through Kinnakeet Shores on gorgeous Cape Hatteras Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.The race terrain includes paved roads through Kinnakeet Shores to wooden bridges, boardwalks, a beach walkway and a few steps up and over the dune to the finish line on the beach. Run, jog, or walk, particiapnts of all ages are welcome.
