August OBX 2009

This was our fourth year and we loved it again. We rented a kayak and took all the kids (7 of them) out for rides in the ocean. We rented a motor boat and got chased in by a thunder storm. We tried to sail on a calm day--that one is a doover. We saw some pretty terrific surf when Hurricane Bill wafted by out to sea.

Our favorite is low tide for the tide pools and calmer ocean. Everyone got a chance to swim this year. And our labrador retreivers--let's just say, they have mastered the art of being a beach bum!!

And for me, its the only place I really feel relaxed!

Thanks for another fabulous year!

A View from the Top

We have been going to the Outer Banks since the early 90's and this year was my first year to actually climb to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The climb is not for the faint of heart ... all 557 steps (at least that was what we were told by the park ranger ... that seemed like alot, until we actually started to climb it. By the time we finished climbing, it may well have been 1,557 ... until we moved out onto the observation deck. It was worth every step.

If you get a chance, by all means, take the trip ... it's well worth the climb. And if you get a chance, come on over to our website, Outer Banks Revealed, to find more great things to do while visiting the Outer Banks.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, when looking for a house in the Outer Banks, consider our Duck house with Sun Realty. Look for DL-33, MemorSeas of a Lifetime.

Amazing Wild Horses

We are getting ready to make our vacation plans for next year and thought we'd share a couple of our photos from last summer. We visited Corolla in August and took a tour of the 4-wheel drive area on the Northern Beach. It was an amazing experience. It was beautiful and unspoiled and the kids had a blast seeing the wild ponies that live on the Outer banks. We were told that they are descendents of the Spanish horses that swam ashore due to shipwrecks hundreds of years ago. We took photos of the horses running free on the oceanfront. We really loved the house where we stayed in Ocean Sands - it was very comfortable, close to the beach, and it had an awesome swimming pool - everything we wanted! The name was Corolla Beach Club. Thanks Sun for letting us share our memories!!! Can't wait til next summer!!! Josie A.

We have owned our rental condo for a few years now, and since we rarely use it during the summer months due to happy vacationers, I wanted to share how wonderful the Fall can be! We ALWAYS spot dolphins and there are few crowds in town. We have 4 kids, and they think of the oceanfront condo as their "happy place". There is always something to do and the ocean is the perfect "fix" for what ails you! If you have the time, check out SOV-2A for a few days this Fall, or even a whole week. You'll be delighted by this direct oceanfront condo!

Beautiful Beach Day in Kill Devil Hills

My friend Melanie and I took our 18 and 19 month old toddlers out to the Kill Devil Hills beach access across from the Stop and Shop. The kids played in the sand (and ate a little bit of sand). We came armed with sunscreen, sippy cups, snacks, beach toys, etc. Just a tip: Beach balls + wind = total insanity. Leave the beach ball at home unless you want to get your exercise chasing it up and down the beach.

The munchkins loved watching the surfers and boogie boarders, and were amazed by a guy with a giant red kite. It was such a fun and relaxing beach day - gorgeous weather, warm water, and friendly people. After we got our fill of the sun and waves, we headed to Dairy Queen in Kill Devil Hills for ice cream cones. It doesn't get much better than that!

South Nags Head

The ocean always reminds me of God's awesome power, and our week at South Nags Head this summer underscored that greatly. The ocean was as clear as I've ever seen it in over 20 years of vacationing at the Outer Banks. We brought extended family this year and it was such a wonderful week we all felt sad when we had to pack up and come back home. Even when it rains, which it did, the ocean is amazing. - South Nags Head Guest

My First Trip to the OBX!

I visited the Outer Banks for the first time in May 2008, and booked a condo with Sun Realty. We stayed in Kill Devil Hills, in a cute little condo just across the street from the beach. Sun made it easy to check in late, and stay for a short trip with their flexible "Freestyle" vacation option.

When we return, we will definitely look for a home in Corolla, on the 4 wheel drive beaches if possible, or Duck. Those areas are beautiful and unique! We dined at many great places during our short stay, including:

Rundown Cafe - AMAZING french fries! We tried a soft shell crab as a group at the table, not our personal favorite, but give it a try!

Owen's - a great option for fine dining. I recommend their scallops, and they have great service.

Pigman's BBQ - Hailing from Colorado, I have never had the NC style of BBQ, but it is awesome! Get a side order of the hushpuppies, yum!

We visited the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, toured the 4x4 beaches (no horse sightings, but lucky you if you see them!), Jockey's Ridge Park (hot hot sand, don't wear sandals), and toured Hatteras Island by car. And of course, the beaches are beautiful and provide endless entertainment.

We can't wait to get back again, and see even more sights and check out more great local restaurants. We have included some of our snapshots as well.

Baby Fletcher's Trip to the Beach!

This was one of Fletcher's first trips to the beach! We were in Corolla on Whalehead Beach and the day was gorgeous! Fletcher looked so darn cute in his little crab hat and board shorts. He played with his dad and brother, and tried to eat some sand. :) During nap time, he laid down in our little beach tent and and fell asleep like a good boy. We can't wait to hit the beach this year. Fletcher's dad will probably try to teach him to surf this summer!
