New Place

Overall, I am very happy with our stay at Ducks in a Row. The pool was great, and the play room for the kids was great. It was def. way to far to walk to the beach, especially with two small children, but the parking passes that were provided were very nice. The decor in the living room was very nice. The only suggestion that I would have is to fix the gates that lead to the backyard. The one on the side of the house was almost impossible to open. Also, the toilet in the bathroom near the front door kept clogging up all week. Other then that, we had a great time. I don't know that we would ever stay here again though, the walk to the beach was way to far.

Good Week

Overall I'm very happy with my stay at Ducks in a Row. This is primarily based on value (what you get vs. what you pay). This property is a little cheaper then some of the other properties and this is likely because of the "cons" listed below. But I'll start with the "pros". 1. This house is made for dogs. Large fenced back yard gives Fido plenty of room to run around. Just be be weary of the little prickles that are growing back there. Also, don't let your dog get into the neighbor's yard, even for a second. There are tons of little cactus in the weeds that will come back in your dog's face and paws. One more thing about the back yard: The outer banks is built on a big sand dune so the back yard is very very soft. If your dog is a digger 2. The pool - very clean, nice sized pool that is perfect after a day at the beach. 3. Location - easy walking distance to the shopping area in Duck. Some may think it's a little far from the beach but unless you are on the beach or across from it you will likely drive anyway with all the stuff you have to carry. There's plenty of parking reserved for this street right there at the beach so we just threw everything in the back of the SUV and drove there. It's about of third of a mile so not bad to walk if you don't have to carry anything or just walking Fido. 4. The kitchen - One of the best stocked kitchens for cookware and dishes that we have ever seen. And both the dishes and the cookware were top quality. Here are the "cons": 1. This place is made for dogs. I know, I mentioned this as pro but because it's made for dogs it probably sees a LOT of dogs in a summer. And, lets face it, dogs will be dogs. They get somewhere new, smell that other dogs have been there and then put their "mark". You could tell in a couple of the bedrooms there was some past "marking". It's not a strong smell but you can smell it. 2. The TV's - There are 6 TV's in the house with a total value of probably under $100. All old style tube TV's some as small as 12". Let's face it, a 12" tube TV in a master bedroom is almost inexcusable with what TV's cost these days. 3. General condition of appliances/bathrooms. The interior of this house is in need of a facelift. The main broken thing was the ice maker in the refrigerator. The umbrella at the pool also was broken. Floors in the living room are significantly scratched. Master bathroom needs an overhaul. Again, based on the price we paid we were very happy with Ducks in a Row in spite of it's shortcomings.
- Sam Wood Sep 2012

The pool was great and the fenced yard perfect for our dog. The kitchen was very poorly equipped as we enjoy cooking our meals at home. Stayed two weeks, weather was perfect. Umbrella by pool was broken, we bought cutting board to use in kitchen, didn't want to damage counter top.
- Sharon Aug 2012

Thank you for complimenting the pool and fenced rear yard. Please know that the kitchen is restocked yearly prior to the beginning of each rental season. This year, we provided quality cookware, bakeware, a knife set as well as other kitchen utensils. We don't know why the cutting board was missing during your stay. The umbrella near the pool was also newly purchased this year. We kindly ask guests to ensure that the umbrella is down during storms because high winds can bend the support rods. Unfortunately, some guests ignore this request and we find ourselves replacing the umbrella almost yearly. We take great pride in making sure that our guests have one of the finest homes in our neighborhood to stay. We will make sure that these minor things are corrected.

A little disappointed

There were definitely positive things and negative things about this house. I'll start with the positives: it is pet friendly, the pool is wonderful--nice, very clean, had nice furniture near the pool, the house itself was clean and well kept, the location was great--not too far to the ocean and not very far to walk to the Duck shops, the parking pass that was included was great and allowed us to drive to the beach and park at the end of our road, which was very helpful if lugging a lot of things to the beach, ceiling fans in the rooms were great. The negatives: when we booked this house it said there was a hot tub and before we went it was taken off the website and there was no hot tub, the fence in the yard was not great--if you have small to small/medium sized dogs there are several places along the fence they could fit under and sneak out--we had to watch our dogs carefully when they were in the backyard off leash, there is no way to get to the fenced in back yard without going outside first--therefore we still had to put our dogs on leashes to get to the back yard, a couple steps from the first floor deck down towards the pool were really soft and we were afraid to walk on them for fear of them breaking, the umbrella at the table by the pool was broken and unusable, the pictures on the website are a bit misleading and imply that the living area (kitchen and family room area) is much larger, but it is pretty small. Overall we had a good time here, however, our expectations based on the information on the website were not met.
- Jen Jul 2012

Glad that you enjoyed the house and the pool. I will let the owners know about the fence so that it can be taken care of, we don't want any pets getting lost. The hot tub was a misadvertisement that was corrected as soon as we were aware. We try be sure that the advertisement of the homes are correct. I do apologize for the misunderstanding. The steps are being check out so that no one gets hurt. I will also let the owners know about the umbrella. Thank you for your feed back it is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for all of the positive remarks. We're happy that you had a good time during your stay. We purchased the house in 2005. At the time of purchase, it did not have a hot tub nor do we plan on adding one. Sun Realty should not have advertised a hot tub on our webpage. It must have been a temporary glitch because it was never advertised on our webpage during the prior seven (7) years. We receive many compliments about our large fenced rear yard. Some small gaps at the base of the fence can occur because the soil is mostly sand and is subject to erosion. Also, as you know, some dogs like to dig at the bottom of fences. We will make sure our lawn maintenance company fills in any smalls gaps. We will also have the couple of steps that you mentioned checked out for support. Finally, we ask that our guests make sure the pool umbrella is closed when not in use. The umbrella support rods could bend if left open during heavy rains and/or winds. We replaced the pool umbrella at the beginning of the rental season. Unfortunately, we will have to replace it again because some guests leave it open when it should be closed. Thanks again for your positive comments. We pride ourselves in making our vacation home comfortable for every guest.

Great location, cozy house

The house has a great layout and is very clean and the furnishings are modern. The location in Duck is perfect...close to the beach on a quiet street within walking distance of all the great shops. We LOVED the pool, the large fenced-in yard, and appreciate the pet-friendliness of the house as well as OBX in general. We were disappointed that many items had mechanical problems. The baby gate was broken and couldn't be used (luckily we brought a couple with us), the toaster started smoking and sparking when we used it the first time and we discovered exposed wires on it (we bought a new one and left it in the kitchen for future renters), the sliding glass door on the top level is broken and won't lock, the blender is old and doesn't chop ice (making frosty summer drinks impossible), and the doorbell is broken so you never know when the pizza arrives unless someone is watching from the deck! Despite these items and just some general maintenance issues, we'd still highly recommend the house based on the layout, pool, pet-friendliness and location, but hope that these items will be corrected for future renters.
- Jennifer W Jul 2011

Thank you for your wonderful comments! We have corrected all of the minor issues... 1) A new baby gate was purchased 2) A new toaster was purchased 3) The lock on the upper sliding glass door has been replaced 4) A new "smoothie" blender was purchased 5) A new doorbell was purchased Thanks Again!

Just arrived

We just arrived yesterday, expecting bad weather for the week. No rain yet and we are enjoying the home. It has been described as "rustic", but as we get older, we call it charming. Updates have been done and the decor is very tasteful. We plan to relax for the week and watch the rain in a very comfortable cottage.
- Jim and Wanda Trice May 2011

Thank you for you comments! The weather man can be wrong sometimes, hopefully if it rains it will at night while we sleep. The home is well cared for by the owners. Enjoy your stay.

We just stayed at Ducks in a

We just stayed at Ducks in a Row, 7/09, and overall had a great time. I would describe the place as having a rustic feel. My only problem was that it was more weathered than we would have expected for the price we paid. But truly we had a great time and I will miss the pool the most.
- Amy Ward Aug 2010

no swing set, pool is great and large, rustic looking inside, deck is not good for small children worn and paint chipping
- Amy Dec 2009

Thank you for bringing the swing set to our attention. The swing set was remove because it was rusting but we have corrected the advertisment accordingly. We certainly value your opinion but this home is very modern and has many modern charms . The pool is large and the fenced back yard is great for children of all ages. The deck is up to code but wih the salt air the paint is showing some wear. Thank you for your comments, we greatly appreciated them.

Thank you for your wonderful comment regarding the pool. All of our past guests have loved swimming and lounging by the pool! The entire interior of the house received a fresh coat of paint in 2010. Solid pine stairs were also installed. The entire second level deck has been replaced. In addition, the hand rails and posts of the first level deck are new. All hand rails and posts have been freshly painted. A swingset is not advertised.
