Hatteras Island Post-Storm Road Conditions & Travel

NC Highway 12 Update: One Lane Open as of November 17th!

Effective today at 3:00 p.m. North Carolina DOT is opening one lane of traffic for all vehicles on NC Highway 12 north of Rodanthe. 

This lane will be open to all vehicles, including trucks and non four wheel drive automobiles.  It will be available 24 hours per day and replaces the temporary four wheel drive lane that has been in use since Sunday.  Passage on the one lane opening today is subject to the following conditions..

• Travel is one lane only. Be prepared to wait for on-coming traffic to clear.
• May be restricted due to weather, construction or emergency vehicles.
• The area ½ mile north and south to the entrance of the one lane area has been declared a work zone.  No parking is permitted in this area.
