Imagine driving down Hwy 158 and looking up to see a huge display of colorful kites in the shape of sea creatures and divers floating in the sky for all to enjoy. This weekend is the 28th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival on the dunes of Jockey's Ridge State Park, located at mile post 12.5 on highway 158. This free event is a tribute to Francis Rogallo, a NASA scientists who invented the flexible wing, which eventually lead to the development of hang gliding, stunt kites and power kites.

As a newcomer to the Outer Banks, I’m always looking for an inexpensive way to explore all the area has to offer! My most recent discovery is the Manteo waterfront. Full of charming boutiques, eclectic dining and a lovely view of the boats coming into dock, I’m officially in love. First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month and I had a great time visiting pubs like Poor Richards, restaurants like the Full Moon Cafe and listening to music performances on the street. Some art galleries had extended hours while restaurants sold plates of food off their porches.

Saturday was my day with Avery and we had so much fun! I took off half a day to take him to the Kitty Hawk Kite's Kite Festival at the Wright Brother's Monument... Traffic was wretched, but Avery was really patient in the car; he just wanted to know why it was taking so long and kept saying "Look at this Aunt Snef-nie, watch me!" Once we got close enough to see the kites from the car, his face just lit up and he got sooooo excited.Which, of course, was exciting for me. The weather was a perfect kite flying day...and there were so many kites to look at!
