Think you've done it all on the OBX? You're really missing out if you haven't had an adventure on the 4-wheel drive beaches north of Corolla. These pristine beaches are located in the northern part of Currituck County and are commonly referred to as Carova. However, this is a bit of a misnomer since the area is really comprised of several communities including Carova, Seagull Beach, Penny's Hill, North Swan Beach and Swan Beach.Nature still rules on this part of the Outer Banks. It's exciting, it's peaceful and it provides a glimpse of what the Outer Banks was like years ago.
Some things just never go out of style... John's Drive In in Kitty Hawk is an Outer Banks classic. As a matter of fact, EVERYTHING about John's is retro 1960s.Located on the Beach Road (the "official" address being 3716 Virginia Dare Trail), John's Drive In is within walking distance of many Kitty Hawk vacation rentals. It's a beach shack with limited parking and some picnic tables. Fancy? No. Yummy? Yes!

You know that old saying "words just don't do it justice?" Well, words can't describe how awesome it is to see the beautiful Outer Banks by helicopter. Two friends and I were lucky enough to have Larry from Coastal Helicopters, LLC take us from the Dare County Regional Airport, across Roanoke Island and up the coast to just north of Kill Devil Hills. We saw everything from shipwrecks and schools of fish just offshore to people hang gliding on Jockey's Ridge. The views were sweeping, breathtaking and just plain cool.I felt completely safe the entire time.

If this sweet little foal doesn't make you smile, then something might just be wrong with ya! Thank you to the folks at the Corolla Wild Horse Fund for sharing this lovely pic.The baby girl's name is Esperanza, or "Hope" in Spanish. She was born on the Currituck Outer Banks within the area designated as a wild horse sanctuary. The horses that roam freely within the reserve are often called "Banker Horses." They are the descendents Spanish mustangs brought to the "New World" by ship during the 16th century.
Let me begin by saying how totally impressed I am by marathon runners. I'm in decent shape and could do any other kind of physical activity all day long, but man, RUNNING 26.2 miles? (I'm more of a 5K kind of gal.) It's not so much the physical strength of marathon runners that I admire; it's the mental strength. When your body is telling you to stop, you push through and tell your body to shut the heck up. I love that.:)We're already getting excited about the 2010 Outer Banks Marathon. The event gets bigger and more fun each year. You can just feel the adrenaline in the air.
A different kind of buried treasure...The waters off the coast of the Outer Banks have certainly earned the nickname "The Graveyard of the Atlantic." Since the early 1500s, well over 1,000 ships have ended up in Davy Jones' notorious locker. The remains of these shipwrecks litter the sea floor and sometimes wash up on shore. The treacherous shoals and strong currents along the Outer Banks are the stuff of legend. One of Sun Realty's homeowners recently stumbled upon a significant piece of the Graveyard of the Atlantic's history.
